In 1990, Chorus Urbanus, considered as one of the most esteemed Maltese choirs, embarked on a remarkable choral tour to Rome, leaving an indelible mark on our history and the hearts of those who witnessed our performances. This tour was not only a testament to the choir’s exceptional talent but also a celebration of their dedication to choral excellence under the direction of Maestro John Galea.

The highlight of this tour was the choir’s performance during the Papal Audience in the prestigious Pope Paul VI Auditorium. This extraordinary opportunity allowed Chorus Urbanus to showcase their vocal prowess in the presence of an international audience, including His Holiness Pope John Paul II. The choir’s harmonious melodies resonated through the auditorium, creating an atmosphere of reverence and awe. Following this unforgettable performance, the choir, accompanied by Mgr Salv Borg and H.E. Dr. Alexander Cachia Zammit, had the privilege of a private audience with Pope John Paul II. This intimate encounter was a profound moment for the choir members, as they received the Pope’s blessings and words of encouragement for their musical journey. This photo memento was later on autographed by Pope John Paul II during a private visit by our musical director in the Vatican, two years later on 17 November 1992.

Apart from this singular moment in the choir’s history, two important liturgical celebrations took place in historic churches: Mass at San Lorenzo in Damaso, nestled in Rome’s cultural heart. This stunning church served as a magnificent backdrop, blending centuries-old ecclesiastical tradition with the choir’s a cappella repertoire. This was followed by High Mass at St Peter’s Basilica on August 6th, 1990, marking the feast of the Transfiguration and the anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s death anniversary. Performing in one of the most revered and iconic places of worship in the world was not only an honour but also a profound spiritual experience for the members. The repertoire included motets by Palestrina, Viadana and John Galea. The offering featured also Missa Brevis by Abbe Boyer.

The Rome 1990 Choral Tour was more than just a series of performances; it was a cultural and spiritual experience that strengthened the choir’s bond and enriched their artistic expression. It also served as a platform to represent Malta’s rich musical heritage on an international stage.

Chorus Urbanus continues to inspire audiences with their dedication to choral music, and the memories of their 1990 Rome tour remain a cherished chapter in our illustrious history. This tour not only highlighted the exceptional talent but also underscored the universal language of music that transcends borders and unites people in harmony.
