Chorus Urbanus performed during the Inauguration of a monument in honour of Mro Giuseppe Giardini Vella by Maltese sculptor Joseph Scerri at Villa Rundle on Sunday 10th June 2018.
Chorus Urbanus’ choral interludes included excerpts from Giardini Vella’s operettas “Il Cuor di Ben” and “La Stella di Barberia” as well as the sacred work “Salve Regina” with the participation of soprano Yvonne Galea. Mario Portelli performed also the ‘Aria di Morgian’ from ‘La Stella di Barberia’. The event was held under the distinguished patronage of Hon Justyne Caruana, Minister for Gozo who also delivered a speech commemorating Mro Giardini Vella prior to to the inauguration.
Chev. Paul M Cassar, President of the La Stella Band Society, and Dr John Galea, Musical Director of Chorus Urbanus, delivered key-note speeches, the former about the life of Mro Giardini Vella and the latter about the Maestro’s musical compositions and the links with the Galea family. Chev Joe M Atttard recited a poem that was specifically written for this occasion. Hon. Dr Justyne Caruana, Minister for Gozo, also delivered a short commemorative speech.
The event was compered by Dr Paul George Pisani. Distinguished guests included, Mr Silvio Valletta, H.E. Msgr. Joe Vella-Gauci, Malta’s ambassador for UNESCO, the Director of Eco-Gozo, various members of the Culture Department, Gozo, Mr Anton Tabone Speaker Emeritus and members from the La Stella Band Club committee. After the unveiling of the monument various floral wreaths were laid against the inaugurated monument, amongst which one by Chorus Urbanus.
