Two sell-out performances of Leslie Bricusse’s musical “Scrooge!” on 3rd and 4th November 2018 at the Oratory Don Bosco unofficially opened this year’s Christmas season with a bang! After the success of last year’s “Fiddler on the Roof” much was being expected from this year’s production and the audiences were not disappointed indeed.

Ludwig Galea in the leading role of Scrooge

The main role of Ebeneezer Scrooge, was entrusted to established Maltese singer Ludwig Galea whose exceptional performance was highly praised. Other established Gozitan singers and actors included Noel Galea, Fabian Galea, Mario Portelli, Ruth Portelli, Joseph Bartolo, Hilda Grima, Angelo Muscat and a significant number of choristers from Chorus Urbanus who formed the backbone of the chorus of the play. This production was co-produced by Chorus Urbanus Productions together with Oratory Don Bosco. The artistic direction was entrusted to Salvino Cremona. The musical direction of the production was fulfilled by Dr John Galea. However due to the unfortunate circumstances that beset Dr Galea, Mro Mark Gauci deputised for him in his absence and conducted the orchestra during the performances.

On behalf of all Chorus Urbanus members and members of the Scrooge team, we wish John Galea a speedy full recovery and we look forward to see him resume full duties with the choir. A big thanks also goes to Mro Mark Gauci who successfully stepped into John Galea’s shoes at such very short notice and ensured that no disruptions whatsoever occur in the scheduled performances.

Without any doubt, the mastermind behind this project was Fr Effie Masini, Director of the Oratory Don Bosco, who always believed in the local talent and in the capabilities of our choir and endeavoured in such demanding projects. This production would undoubtedly continue to elevate the name of Gozo as an Island of Culture that despite of its size, it continues to bear the flagship of culture in the Maltese Islands.
