On the crisp evening of 9 March, 2024, the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart in Fontana resonated with the enchanting blend of music for Trumpet and Organ offered as part of Feel the Magic 2022-24. The concert featured the remarkable talents of trumpeter Jason Camilleri and organist Franco Cefai. As the evening settled in, a sizeable but highly appreciative audience settled into the wooden pews, eager to experience this harmonious collaboration.
Dr John Galea, the artistic director of ‘Feel the Magic’ introduced the programme and the distinguished soloists who have become a galvanized musical tandem.
Jason Camilleri is an accomplished trumpeter whose charisma was palpable as he performed exquisitely every item on offer. The program unfolded like a musical tapestry, with a thoughtful selection of works spanning different eras. “I Sing the Mighty Power of God” by James Curnow: Jason’s trumpet playing soared, evoking the grandeur of creation. The church’s acoustics embraced every note, filling the sacred space with an almost celestial energy. This was followed by “Trumpet Voluntary” by Boyce, a regal piece that showcased Jason Camilleri’s virtuosity. His golden tones danced with the organ’s majestic chords, creating an uplifting atmosphere. Next on the programme was “Be Thou My Vision” (arranged by Curnow). The audience held its breath as the trumpet lines whispered luscious melodies. The organ provided a rich foundation, grounding us in devotion, the more so with the church’s sober décor and the imposing statue of the Crucified Christ.
It was then the time for solo interludes where organist Franco Cefai regaled the audience with an exuberant organ interlude “Vocalise No. 2” by M. Lo Muscio. His fingers danced across the instrument, conjuring rich harmonies that transported us through time. In between the two solo interludes Fr Geoffrey George Attard presented our Artistic Director with a copy of his latest publication on Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, entitled ‘Forgione da Foggia’.
After this presentation there followed a hauntingly beautiful composition for solo trumpet “The Prayers of Hildegard of Bingen” by Amy Dunker, where Jason Camilleri’s remarkable sensitivity was clearly evident. His performance captures the mysticism and spiritual depth inherent in these ancient texts. Through his expressive voice and nuanced phrasing, Camilleri brought to life the profound connection between music, faith, and the divine.
After these solo interludes the programme unfolded with another three pieces. “Saviour Like a Shepherd Lead Us” by Dallas Blair showed the tender interplay between trumpet and organ. Jason’s phrasing painted pastoral scenes, while Franco Cefai’s crisp fingerwork came across effortlessly. Then followed Faure’s “Pie Jesu Domine” that revealed Jason Camilleri’s lyrical side. His trumpet rang with poignant sweetness, echoing through the enclave. “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” (also by Dallas Blair) provided a fitting grand finale for this concert . Here, the trumpet and organ united in triumphant celebration as the trumpet’s final notes soared, filling the church with exultation.
As the last echoes faded, the audience gave a big hand to the two performers. The Fontana Parish Church enclave, with its old stones, did indeed witness pure magic. Jason Camilleri and Franco Cefai had woven a spell, bridging time and tradition. It was indeed a privilege for the audience to be part of this musical communion!
