The “Feel the Magic of Music for Passiontide” concert held on March 20, 2024, at Fontana Parish Church featuring Chorus Urbanus conducted by Dr John Galea was a profound and moving experience indeed! The selection of works, that included Kodály’s “Stabat Mater” and Armando Antonelli’s “Miserere Mei,” provided a rich tapestry of somber and reflective tones appropriate for the season of Lent.
The performance of “Crux Fidelis” and “Improperia” by John Galea stood out with its intricate harmonies and emotive power, while Ingegnieri’s “In monte Oliveti” offered a delicate counterpoint with its serene and contemplative melody. The “Adoramus te Christe” by Dubois was delivered with grace and reverence, and Ghedini’s “Recessit Pastor Noster” echoed the themes of loss and devotion inherent to Passiontide.
The inclusion of Gregorian chant further anchored the concert in the tradition of sacred music, providing a timeless connection to the liturgical past. The choir’s performance was both technically proficient and emotionally resonant, capturing the solemnity and spiritual depth of the occasion.
The musical programme was punctuated by moving reflections scripted by Rev Canon Simon Cachia and recited by Krista Mercieca.
Overall, the concert was a beautiful tribute to the Passiontide period, leaving the audience in a state of reflection and reverence. It was a night that not only showcased the talents of the choral force, and solo work performed by soprano Yvonne Galea, treble voice Krista Mercieca, and Bass Noel Galea and Riden Glinofria, but also the enduring power of sacred music to stir the soul.
