On Thursday, 12 December 2024, St. George’s Basilica was filled with the enchanting sounds of the Feel the Magic of Christmas 2024 concert, also known as ‘Il-Kunċert tal-Milied (27th edition)’, featuring the exceptional seasoned talents of Chorus Urbanus, the emergent prowess of Chorus Urbanus Juniors, with the excellent musicianship of the Urbanus Festive Orchestra, (leader: Matteo Colombo) all under the masterful direction of Dr John Galea. This special concert not only celebrated the festive season but also kickstarted the 50th anniversary celebrations of the choir, marking the beginning of a milestone year for this esteemed ensemble that has become a conspicuously dynamic cultural protagonist in the Maltese Islands and beyond.
This Golden Jubilee Concert (27th edition) opened by an address by the Choir’s president Mr. Karl J. Buhagiar who gave a brief outline of the choir’s main achievements during its 50 years of service to the national cultural scenario.
The program opened with the uplifting “Look at the World,” setting a joyful and reflective tone for the night. The chorus’s harmonies were impeccable, capturing the essence of the festive season. This was followed by the charming “Star Carol,” which showcased the sweet, pure voices of the choral forces, leaving the audience in awe of their amazing talent contouring the rise and fall of the music.
One of the highlights of the evening was a moving rendition of “Mary Did You Know,” which brought a serene and contemplative atmosphere to the basilica. The emotional depth of the performance was palpable, drawing a heartfelt response from the audience.
“God Bless Us Everyone” sung by Mario Portelli supported by the choir and “Hymn for Christmas Day” were performed with great energy and enthusiasm, while the traditional Maltese carol “Ninni la tibkix izjed” added a local touch to the program, where the Juniors enchanted the audience with this carol’s soothing lullaby-melody.
“O Holy Night” and “Believe” were standout performances, with soloists Hilda Grima, Katrina Mifsud and Fabian Galea delivering powerful and poignant interpretations. The audience was visibly moved, many shedding tears of joy and reflection.
As customary, half way through the concert, a poem written by Chev Joe M. Attard was recited and a collection was made in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.
The concert continued with timeless classics like “Adeste Fideles” performed by Noel Galea and both choirs and “Silent Night,” creating a communal sense of peace and unity. The Urbanus Festive Orchestra provided a lush, vibrant accompaniment, elevating each piece to new heights.
“The Lord’s Prayer” was performed with reverent power and grace by Michel Angelo Muscat highlighting the spiritual essence of the concert that celebrates the great mystery of the Incarnate Word.
“Manger Throne” and “Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas” brought the evening to a joyous close, leaving the audience with a sense of celebration and holiday cheer.
Dr John Galea’s direction was flawless and authoritative, guiding the ensemble through a beautifully curated program that resonated deeply with all in attendance. The combination of seasoned performers and budding young talent created a magical experience that truly embodied the spirit of Christmas, especially during the encore that was met with a standing ovation and loud cheers to the celebratory year.
“Feel the Magic of Christmas 2024” was an unforgettable evening of music and celebration, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to be present. It was a night filled with joy, reflection, and the timeless beauty of Christmas music, marking the beginning of a historic and festive year for Chorus Urbanus.
