Under the twinkling Gozo sky, the Villa Rundle Amphitheatre was transformed into a shimmering underwater kingdom as Feel the Magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR made waves on August 25 and 26. Presented by Chorus Urbanus Juniors, this was a sold-out production where tickets for the two shows sold within two hours. The evening was introduced by our artistic director Dr John Galea who hailed this production as a radiant celebration of youth, talent, and theatrical wonder.

From the moment the curtain metaphorically rose, the audience was swept into Ariel’s world—a place of longing, laughter, and luminous storytelling. The young cast spearheaded by Joy Xerri (Ariel), Kurt Theuma Xerri (Prince Eric),  Giorgio Anici Camilleri (Sebastian), Elisa Vella (Ursula), Mireille Attard (Scuttle),

Faith Buttigieg (Flounder)  Jonathan Chini (King Triton), Benjamin Grech (Grimsby), Giosiana Cardona (Chef louis) and the six Mersisters: Nyann Vella, Nina Debono Curmi,  Nina Xerri, Katlyn Vella, Robin Saguna and Kayleen Mercieca delivered performances brimming with heart and energy, capturing the essence of beloved characters with surprising maturity and charm. Their vocals soared through iconic numbers like “Part of Your World”, “Under the Sea”, “She’s in Love”, “Human Stuff”, and “Kiss the Girl” earning enthusiastic applause and more than a few goosebumps.

Director Jamie Camilleri and Music Director/Choreographer Hilda Grima orchestrated a production that was both polished and playful. The pacing was tight, the transitions seamless, and the choreography vibrant—especially during ensemble scenes that brought the ocean to life with movement and color.

A standout element was the stunning costume designs by Hilda Grima and Yvonne Galea, whose creations added layers of magic and personality to each character. From Ariel’s flowing tail to Ursula’s dramatic octopus flair, the costumes were not just attire—they were storytelling tools that elevated the entire experience.

With regards to musicality and atmosphere, the musical direction ensured that every note resonated with clarity and emotion. Backed by a well-balanced sound set-up provided by PRO Stage Sound (John Luke Debrincat) and atmospheric lighting by Beam Lighting (Chris Gauci), the amphitheatre became a portal to Atlantica, enchanting both children and adults alike.

With both performances selling out within hours, it was clear that anticipation was high—and the show delivered as the audience reaction amply proved. Families, theatre lovers, and Disney fans alike were treated to a night of joy, nostalgia, and community spirit. The standing ovation at the end was not just for the cast, but for the entire team that made this production a triumph.

In short, Feel the Magic of The Little Mermaid JR wasn’t just a show—it was a splash of summer magic that reminded us all of the power of dreams, music, and the sea. Above all it was a success story of team work from backstage crew led by Karl J, Buhagiar, to the youngest of our performers. It was a Junior Musical that stole our hearts. Bravo to Chorus Urbanus Juniors and everyone who made this production unforgettable.
