Inspired by the world-famous concerts organised by the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverein,the Malta Philharmonic under the direction of conductor Dr John Galea heralded the arrival of 2018 in style with another edition of the President’s New Year’s Concert on 7 January 2018. 

The concert held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre Auditorium saw the MPO grossly engaged in playing the festive fare in a concert that featured works by Verdi, Hellmesberger, Johann Strauss Jr, Humperdinck, Arditi, Bizet, von Suppé, Puccini, Tchaikowsky and  Offenbach. In response to the long ovation given, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra played the eponymous Radetsky March by Johann Strauss Sr. to the delight of the enraptured audience.

The concert has been acclaimed as a heart-warming concert that was well received by a hugely receptive audience. The orchestra was also be joined by no less than two renowned Maltese singers – soprano Miriam Cauchi and mezzo-soprano Marvic Monreal – who performed a number of perenially favourite arias and duets. Their voices blended beautifully together in the heart-rending duets and 

The President’s Concert for the New Year was transmitted live on TVM2.
